Facelift vs. Mini Facelift: What’s the Difference?
While a face and neck lift tightens the entire face and neck, a mini facelift uses a technique with reduced incisions to treat only specific areas, such as the cheeks and jawline.
Sagging skin is tightened and gently redefined. Your facial contours become more defined again, while your natural expression is preserved. Since the area treated in a mini facelift is smaller, recovery is faster and you are back on your feet sooner.
A mini facelift is ideal for addressing mild skin sagging and offers subtle rejuvenation. The result? Your face will appear more vibrant and regain a naturally radiant expression — without changing your appearance.
“A mini facelift is the ideal solution if you want to gently but effectively treat the first signs of volume loss and excess skin. “
– Dr. Isabelle Sawetz-Paiva
When Is a Mini Facelift Useful?
The first signs of skin aging can appear as early as between the ages of 20 and 30. A slight loss of elasticity and volume in the lower face and cheeks can make the face look tired. A mini facelift is an effective method of gently tightening specific areas without changing your facial features. Excess skin is removed without affecting deeper structures.
A mini facelift is right for you if you:
- notice the first signs of volume loss and sagging cheeks and feel that your face has “slipped down.”
- want to turn back the clock by about 10 years.
- want to give your face more vitality.
Once a certain degree of excess skin, loss of volume or decreased elasticity has been reached, the effectiveness of minimally invasive treatments such as fillers is limited, as there is a risk of creating an ‘overfilled face’. In such cases, a surgical procedure such as a mini facelift will usually produce a more natural result than constant filler injections.
But don’t worry — naturalness and achieving a fresh, authentic look are my top priorities, and you won’t end up looking “changed”. We will discuss which treatment is best for you in detail during a personal consultation.

Mini-Facelift: What to Expect
Before Surgery: Consultation & Planning
Before the procedure, we will take the time to discuss your wishes and expectations. I will assess your face and anatomical situation and create a personalized treatment plan.
A surgical procedure requires careful planning and thorough preparation. This includes a detailed medical history, a physical examination, and, if necessary, additional tests. We will discuss all of these steps in detail during the consultation so that you feel fully prepared.
For your guidance, here are some general tips on what you should keep in mind before the operation:
- Avoid alcohol and nicotine.
- Do not take any blood-thinning painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen for 10 days before the operation.
- On the day of the operation: Come without makeup and avoid using creams.
During Surgery: Subtle & Tightening
I perform mini facelifts on an outpatient basis in my practice under local anesthesia, twilight sleep, or short general anesthesia.
The incisions are made either along the hairline or in natural skin folds so that no visible scars remain. I remove excess skin in the cheek and temple area and then gently suture the skin without tension.
After about 2 hours, everything is over and you can recover from the operation in peace.
After Surgery: Aftercare & Healing Process
After the procedure, you will receive cooling compresses and can rest at the practice. If everything looks good, you can then go home.
Slight swelling and bruising may occur in the first few days after the operation—these are completely normal and will quickly subside with rest and cooling. Make sure that your head is slightly elevated when sleeping, and avoid lying on your side to prevent swelling and fluid accumulation. After 7–10 days, the stitches can be removed and you can return to everyday activities.
Your Recovery Guide: Tips for Optimal Healing
- Allow yourself plenty of rest and time for yourself!
- Avoid saunas and steam baths for at least 2 weeks.
- Avoid intense sun exposure on the scar area for 3 months.
- Do not exercise for 2 weeks.
- Avoid makeup for the first 2 weeks.
